Would you like to see a more cycle-friendly Victoria Road?

A public consultation is to be held into plans for a major overhaul of one of the busiest roads in the southside.

Scots charity Sustrans has donated £30,000 to fund the redesign of Victoria Road, in a bid to make the area safer for cyclists and pedestrians with improved access for public transport.

Glasgow City Council are proposing to build new zebra crossings, reallocate road space, introduce segregated cycle lanes and build bus stop islands.

The redesign could see the introduction of cycle lanes inspired by the stepped kerb system in Copenhagen on each side of the road, or a two way segregated cycle lane similar to Waterloo Street.

Members of the public can attend a meeting to discuss their views on the proposal on Thursday, November 26, at the Govanhill Baths from 3pm-7pm.

While the council stress the proposal is in its very early stages ahead of a formal consultation, plans have already garnered support from Southside Central councillor Soryia Siddique.

Councillor Siddique said: "I welcome local stakeholders views on possible improvements that could be made to Victoria Road to encourage those living and working in the area to enhance travel options, including walking and cycling.

"It is important a public consultation event is planned to assist in this process taking on board the local communities aspirations."

The project proposal states hopes for the area to "become a true transport hub offering choice of travel" in conjunction with the Glasgow bike hire scheme and the local train station.

It follows the latest development in city cycling infrastructure - a new £1.25m cycle route connecting the south side to the city centre opened on October 24.

Since 2007, Glasgow has seen a 200% rise in the number of cyclists, with investment in Glasgow's cycle networks above the national average.

But the continued development of the city's cycle networks is something Sustrans Scotland national director John Lauder says could be a "game-changer".

He said: "We’re delighted to be supporting Glasgow City Council to make the city’s streets safer and more attractive places to walk and cycle.

"We welcome the ambition of the changes being proposed, which will give greater priority to people making journeys on foot and bike. We'd encourage anyone with an interest in getting around the city to give their views to the council.

"This follows on from the launch of the South-West City Way just last week. We think projects like these will prove to be a game-changer for Scotland's biggest city and we look forward to working the council in the future to deliver more like them."

A formal consultation is expected to be held shortly involving the help of bicycle user groups, community councils, groups, residents and other interested bodies.

The redesign of Victoria Road was also allocated £30,000 from the council's Cycle Walking Safer Streets (CWSS) budget.
