Maid in Scotland pop-up cafe springing up around Glasgow

Maid in Scotland pop-up cafe springing up around Glasgow

A pop-up Japanese inspired 'maid and butler' cafe is springing up across the city made up of singers, dancers, artists and bakers.

An off-shoot of the cosplay restaurants found predominantly in Japan, Maid in Scotland features four butlers and nine maids who serve up baked goods and coffee while in character.

A growing trend worldwide since it launched in 2001, the maid costumes vary from cafe to cafe but most are based on the costume of French maids, often composed of a dress, a petticoat, a pinafore, a matching hair accessory (such as a frill or a bow) and stockings.

Often employees will also cosplay as anime characters and sometimes wear animal ears with their outfits to add more appeal.

Kimberley McWilliam, 25, is the head maid of this latest Glasgow cafe which promises "a unique experience" for its customers.

She said: "Maid in Scotland came around in 2013 and started off as a few girls with a small idea which they used to help out at an event, and it grew from there.

"Since then, Maid in Scotland has grown to have 13 members who work on this project in their free time. We went into this blind with literally no idea if we would actually get anywhere, but roll on two years later we all work hard behind the scenes planning each event carefully and people seem to enjoy it.

"There is nothing more satisfying than seeing people happy and spotting a familiar face of someone who has returned."

The staff come from all over Scotland and each cafe event has its own theme with different cakes, decorations and even live dance/song performances to go with it.

All the food provided for the cafe is baked by the organisers with each event in mind with supplies of authentic Asian soft drinks and sweets also available.

The cafe also raises money for specific charities, with proceeds from the next five of the organisation's events already pledged in support of MND Scotland.

"Our plan for the future is hopefully to host more events around more areas of Scotland," adds Kimberley.

"At the moment we have a space donated to us in the Stepz in Time Dance studio in Langside. However as a pop-up cafe we would love to travel out further and introduce other people to our events.

"We hope to one day have our own cafe space and be a fixed feature with a base to run pop-up events from."

This is not the first Japanese maid cafe to make Glasgow its home - the Marshmallow Dreams Maid Cafe has been operating for over a year promising "sprinkles and smiles" with every coffee.
