Where the Monkey Sleeps brings 'anti-sandwich' to Argyle Street

A new eatery offering the "ultimate sandwich experience" has opened in Glasgow city centre.

Where the Monkey Sleeps, a popular lunchtime venue which was initially started on West Regent Street, has now opened a second branch on 340 Argyle Street.

Voted the 'best food on the go' in The Skinny magazine in 2015, the independent sandwich shop has built something of a reputation among snackers in Glasgow for its unusual combinations such as the Meathammer (haggis/chorizo/red onion marmalade and mature cheddar) and Witchfynder General (Chicken/chorizo/Applewood smoked cheddar/spring onion/chilli mayo and shredded leaves).

Glasgow-born Sofie Ford, 26, owner of the shop, said: "Where the Monkey Sleeps is serious about sandwiches and we are on a constant quest to give our customers the ultimate sandwich experience.

"We’ve worked hard to create sandwiches that you just can’t get anywhere else. We try not to follow trends and fads because the reality is that while trends come and go, everyone has always loved something hearty between two slices of bread. We try not to stray too far from that."

The new shop, which has moved into a former pawn shop, has created eight new jobs and has also pledged to continue a partnership with Glasgow City Mission, a local charity they previously worked with to feed 120 homeless people Christmas dinner last year.

A percentage of the shop's profits, along with money generated by carrier bag charges, will be donated to the charity, along with any unsold food at the end of each day.

The new café will also double as an art gallery for artist Paul Marshall, a client of Glasgow City Mission (GCM).

"The new shop has allowed us to really grow our relationship with Glasgow City Mission," explained Sofie.

"As a business we greatly believe in building community, not only with our customers and everyone who is part of our team but also with those who are working to make our city great.

"It is a massive privilege to help in any way with the work the GCM do and we are thrilled to see interest in the paintings already."

The shop itself has been kitted out with sofas from the Salvation Army, vinyl art displays from Oxfam, building materials from Yooz - a reuse and recycling project.

Sofie added: "Where the Monkey Sleeps is ultimately about looking after our customers well and feeding them really good, homemade food. We want to build a light-hearted and fun atmosphere to break up the working day for many of our customers. The new shop is a testament to that commitment."
